Log expenses with Siri, or hold to talk

Two voice paths

Siri and Shortcuts work on iOS 18. Ask to log an expense or income; the app opens a form with what it understood. Edit anything that came out wrong, then confirm.

Hold-to-talk is iOS 26. Press and hold +, say the amount, a date, a category, maybe an account, then let go. Recognition uses on-device dictation. The raw transcript is not stored in the note.

Nothing saves itself

Voice never writes a finished transaction. If the category name matches more than one option, the form keeps its default. If the date is ambiguous, today stays. You are meant to glance at the row before it hits the book.

A spoken “set as recurring” flag only applies on a personal ledger. Shared ledgers ignore that command because shared records do not own recurring rules yet.

When the button is missing

Hold-to-talk appears only when Apple reports a supported speech locale for the app language and the speech asset is available. On iOS 18, or on a device that cannot load that asset, the ordinary + button remains. Type the amount as usual.

Microphone audio lives in memory during capture and is dropped when capture ends. It is not synced and not sent to analytics.

Log an expense by voice in SimpleSpend

1. On iOS 18, ask Siri to log an expense, or run the Shortcut.
2. On iOS 26, hold + and say the amount, date, and category.
3. Check the form. Fix anything that does not match.
4. Confirm. The record is saved only then.
